HIC offers home study services for Hawaii-based families wishing to adopt through a different adoption service provider for either an inter-country or a domestic adoption. HIC will collaborate with your placing agency to ensure that appropriate home study requirements are met. We are also able to provide home study services for families who have an approved home study from another agency but have recently moved to Hawaii.
HIC offers post-adoption or post-placement reporting and services for Hawaii-based families who have or plan to complete an adoption internationally or domestically. HIC will collaborate with your placing agency to clarify frequency and number of required visits and reports.
All HIC counselors appreciate that adoption is a lifelong process for the adopted child, the birth family, and the adoptive family. They are able to support families as they navigate the various social/emotional/developmental challenges that arise from the adoptive experience, the intricacies of open adoption relationships, and transracial family and parenting issues. The HIC Counseling center is able to partner with parents and help them understand the key role they play in their child’s healing process.
Counseling at HIC will be offered on a sliding scale.
HIC offers preadoption training courses at our Honolulu offices February through November, alternating Domestic Adoption and Intercountry Adoption every other month. Courses run four (4) weeks in a row, one day per week for four (4) hours each day for a total of twelve (12) hours of course work. Courses prepare adoptive applicants for the essential issues of adoptive parenting. Course meets Hague training requirements. For more information and a schedule of upcoming trainings, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
From 1975 until 1994 HIC worked with Holt and Holt Korea to place children in adoptive homes. HIC and Holt Korea continue to work together, now assisting adoptees who are seeking information about their adoptions and birth relatives.
HIC advises all families who have adopted internationally to establish your foreign adoption with the State of Hawaii. This will result in your child having a local adoption decree and birth certificate, making future access to these documents much easier.
HIC will provide its clients notary services for adoption related documents free of charge or for a nominal fee.
